Artist Statement
Godfrey is an artist originally from London, England, who now resides in Orlando, Florida, USA. In the 1990s, he immigrated from the United Kingdom as the oldest of four children by Jamaican parents. Art had always been important in Godfrey’s life, but he did not pursue it seriously as a career focus until the economic recession of 2008, at which time he suddenly found himself jobless. A decision was needed for the next step.
Godfrey’s primary pursuit in art is the creation of realist figurative sculpture; his pieces come into being through periods of intense observation from life accompanied by long hours of meticulous handicraft. Godfrey’s objective has been to capture and convey to viewers the living figure expressed most powerfully within a decisive moment of action. His figures reach and/or extend beyond the sculptural base demanding the attention of the viewer, conveying an air of strength and certainty. Godfrey works with clay in the traditional sense building form with his hands. He now expands his craft with the use of digital tools such as the software application ZBrush.
